Don’t lie: you didn’t realize until a couple years ago that Cleveland even had an Asiatown. Don’t mistake this neighborhood for your average Chinatown in some other city. We’re talking continental influence. Tour it this weekend at the Cleveland Asian Festival, Saturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20. Asiatown spans the near-eastside blocks from East [...]

While the 60-beds-with-fab-view Cleveland Hostel doesn’t open until summer 2012, you can sneak a preview at this Weekend in Ohio City. From recording studios, to labels, to poster artists, to instrument manufacturers, Cleveland Kitchen’s Jarrod Zickefoose believes everything a musician needs is right here in Northeast Ohio. Oh my, indeed. So. It’s happened. The ultimate convergence of my favorite things. It’s Critical Mass, Respect the Bike (side of Tweed Ride on Saturday, please), Palookafest and Polka Happy Hour on Friday. The weekend continues with Beachland tunes, youth art at 78th Street studios, trail-running, road-racing and Things I’d Do If I Ran the Zoo at our zoo.

Will this be next year? The Cleveland Browns take another crack at drafting the team’s future. Opportunities abound to pull up a stool — drink and food specials in hand — and wait with bated breath with a dozens of your closest friends to see what that future may hold. Draft madness starts with parties at Lion on Lorain, as well as the official party at Cleveland Browns Stadium, through Saturday’s MS benefit draft party at Barley House Cleveland.

Cavaliers are done. Indians are out of town. And the NFL draft is still about a week away (Trent Richardson, anyone?). Well, sporty spice, sporting times around Northeast Ohio just don’t stop. Pull up a seat, get on a bike, take to your mat or cheer from the sidelines at my top five place to get moving around northeast Ohio this weekend.

How big is Record Store Day? Well, the annual event, which has rocked the third Saturday in April since 2008, has its own Wikipedia page to explain itself. It also has an all-Waterloo salute this Saturday, featuring live tunes, new music, special limited releases, deals, prizes, free tickets and the general spirit of celebration that comes with the observance of any good, religious holiday. Patron saint Music Saves opens at noon and lives music takes over Waterloo into the night.

Cleveland is no slouch for art. Waterloo isn’t your mama’s Collinwood anymore and 78th Street Studios has been called the westside’s art mecca. Galleries dot the streets of Tremont, Cleveland Heights, Gordon Square and Little Italy. Artwalks abound. The new MOCA in Uptown fills out by the day. And the Cleveland Museum of Art? Well, it’s an economic powerhouse. Art takes many forms. In Cleveland this weekend, you can buy some, watch it happen, look and listen and even contribute to the creation of something beautiful.

Brandon Vulpitta admits he’s not a musician; he’s just a fan. Take a listen and then hit a show.

Last weekend I checked out my first rugby game (Cleveland Rovers whooped some Cincinnati Kelts butt!), and I have to say I’m eager to see more. But when I’ve recruited friends to join me field-side, their most common quip is I don’t know junk about rugby. Well, I’ve provided a quick lesson on the game. Now you can take your foundation to Impet Park on Saturday for a Cleveland Rugby doubleheader. The CLE women’s rugby team Iron Maidens play Pittsburgh at 11 a.m., followed by the national champ-seeking Cleveland Rovers against Ohio University at 1 p.m.
