In the eye of the beholder

Cleveland is no slouch for art. Waterloo isn’t your mama’s Collinwood anymore and 78th Street Studios has been called the westside’s art mecca. Galleries dot the streets of Tremont, Cleveland Heights, Gordon Square and Little Italy. Artwalks abound. The new MOCA in Uptown fills out by the day. And the Cleveland Museum of Art? Well, it’s an economic powerhouse. Art takes many forms. In Cleveland this weekend, you can buy some, watch it happen, look and listen and even contribute to the creation of something beautiful.

Buyer’s Remorse

Beware, my friends. The holidays are approaching, and that really means just one thing: attack of the zombie shoppers. At least that’s what photographer Brian Ulrich found in his surreptitious 2001-11 photo expedition, Copia — Retail, Thrift and Dark Stores, which is currently on exhibit at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Buyer’s Remorse, a young professionals happy hour on Nov. 18, invites you to dress in something you bought on a whim, that hasn’t left your closet since it entered or else something wholly thrifty and vintage, to celebrate Ulrich’s work. You’ll also get to meet the artist and rock out to high-energy tunes (with a cash bar).

In the Bamboo Grove with Fu Baoshi

Asian art at the Cleveland Museum of Art — like so many treasures in this city — is fast becoming one of the world’s worst-kept secrets. Just as fast: it’s ranking as one of the world’s best. Period. The museum’s latest exhibition opens Saturday, Oct. 16, but you can celebrate the art of modern master Fu Baoshi in style with drinks (the way he’d like it), art and Chinese takeout at Bamboo Grove, a young professionals happy hour. Buy your tickets or enter to win a free pair to the event.

Seeing, believing, talking with Jonze and Cholodenko

Lisa Cholodenko, director and co-writer of The Kids are All Right, and Spike Jonze, the multi-hyphenate filmmaking machine Where the Wild Things Are and countless music videos, including that praiseworthy Fatboy Slim ditty we still can’t get out of our heads, join producer Ted Hope to talk about making films in this brave new world.
