Last weekend I checked out my first rugby game (Cleveland Rovers whooped some Cincinnati Kelts butt!), and I have to say I’m eager to see more. But when I’ve recruited friends to join me field-side, their most common quip is I don’t know junk about rugby. Well, I’ve provided a quick lesson on the game. Now you can take your foundation to Impet Park on Saturday for a Cleveland Rugby doubleheader. The CLE women’s rugby team Iron Maidens play Pittsburgh at 11 a.m., followed by the national champ-seeking Cleveland Rovers against Ohio University at 1 p.m.

Machine Gun Kelly put it best: “No one man is king of this city; where I’m from, we’re all royalty.” How appropriate that today we crown Unmiserable Clevelander of the Year? Well, turns out we’re all winners. Because the people on this list remind us that there’s a reason to acknowledge our problems, to take action against our problems, to not slow down tackling our problems, to volunteer, give, rebuild, invest, cheer, care to fix our problems. It’s Cleveland. This city is worth improving, promoting, visiting, hugging, boosting, documenting, changing, recovering, loving. These people are our most valuable resource. That’s why I made you vote for the winner.

Take a look at this year’s top nominees and then vote for your favorite — from a Rust Belt revivalist to one of the city’s brightest cheerleaders, an NFL star to a CLE-loving attorney, a photographer, a community advocate and an illustrator, a mascot, a comedian, a couple artistic entrepreneurs and the queen of fashion. Voting is open until Jan. 6 at 11:59 p.m. Winner announced on Monday, Jan. 9.

It’s been one helluva year in Cleveland. And, truly, the energy that powers this city’s growing momentum comes from people like you, the Unmiserable Clevelander. So, I was thinking it was high time we start recognizing that utter lack of misery and fabulous bounty of optimism with a major award. Take a moment to think about the people you’ve seen, met, read about or dreamed of this year. Who’s the most unmiserable in the (Cleve)land?

Sure, lovin’ your city is pretty trendy these days. But for good reason. Our emotional connection to cities isn’t just a feeling. It’s a resource. And when a city has a wellspring of emotionally invested, bright, energetic citizens, well, my friends: that city has a future. That’s what writer Peter Kageyama will be in Cleveland on Thursday to talk about, and it’s that energy that he explores in his book, For the Love of Cities.

It speaks for itself, so I don’t want to say too much. But hollah, Case Western Reserve University! Produced for the law school, this video has done a masterful job demonstrating what it’s like to live here, work here, play here, love here. Just watch it.

One of the raddest, most enduring parts of this CLE Renaissance is connecting with other Cleveland-lovers. Greg Murray is one of my favorite CLE connections. He’s a sweet, impressive guy with unparalleled enthusiasm for this city and serious talent behind the camera. (Plus, he can run 100 miles.) You know he’s got stories to tell. And tell stories he is. Earlier this month, he kicked off 100 Clevelanders, a photography series featuring faces of locals who not only live here, but love it too.

It starts with an hour-long beach clean-up activity leading up to one helluva sand sculpture contest at noon. Food trucks at 1 p.m. and live music through 11 p.m. Things get absolutely unmiserable with a 4 p.m. bike ride around the neighborhood, complete with site-seeing, snacks and native-planting.
